I {Heart} Books!

Tonight was the pre-sale for the 28th annual Friends of the Library Booksale. It was actually the pre-pre-sale only open for Volunteers. Tomorrow night is the Friends members sale (which I will be working) and Saturday and Sunday are open to the public. I always adore a good booksale and a huge one is ALWAYS a good one. I do however get a little overwhelmed by all of the books. And I don't like how most of the crafting books are the special collections area (more expensive individually priced books) because of the resurgence of crafting. Tonight's sale was relatively low-key compared to the other nights. Tomorrow will be crazy! Gypsy and I worked it last year on Friday night like we will be this year. There aren't any buying limits like there are at the pre-pre-sale so people come in with pallets and garbage cans and anything else they can load up with books. Its always a lot of fun even if it is very hectic.

I did fairly well this year. I got a ton of knitting and crochet magazines, as well as a bundled 2006 Martha Stewart Magazine set.I was so excited to find a few interweave knits.

I also got quite a few books. Most of which were on my want list. I got my mom some quilting magazines and an old cookbook as well.

I've read a lot of these, but wanted to add them to my collection. I was extremely excited to find the three Shel Silverstein books. I was saddened that I only found the first and third books in the "His Dark Materials" trilogy. The only craft books I bought were "The Complete Encyclopedia of Stitchery,""Tatting: Techniques and History,"and and old "Guide to Arts and Crafts" book.

My grand total for the evening: $54.25. A complete steal if you ask me.

Just a few things...

The shawl has been on pause because of my inability to knit lace while having any outside stimuli. For example, talking of any sort, TV, radio, podcasts, and... Gypsy was a good people and brought me his PlayStation. I've been a little preoccupied with Kingdom Hearts. Is anyone else easily addicted to video games like I am? I seriously have a problem (which is why I've kept myself from buying one). I don't like a lot of games. But when I find one that I like its hard to drag me away from it. Craftyminx quote "o" the day: (to gypsy) "Are all your dreams in video game format when you play hours of video games?" Gypsy - "Ummm NO. " Maybe I should cut back.

In other news work has been horribly slow. We got in a huge shipment of Junie B. Jones books this week so I've been busily catching up on my Kindergartner vocab and word usage.
Junie B. Quote "O" the day: "Time-outs kill the glee." Indeed they do.

New yarn, new friends...

I went to the yarn store today. I got some pretty stuff... I am really in to saturated colors lately. I want to cast on socks right now! haha.

I got to meet my friend whom I am starting the shawnee knitting group with today. We went to the crochet group meeting then drove to Edmond to pick up another knitter before going to Guthrie for some yarn therapy. It was a lot of fun. I also bought my first pair of Addi Turbos. They are ok, I'm sure the smaller sizes are better than the #5's I got. I'm still pretty amazed by the pointyness of the knitpicks options though.

I've gotten through 7 pattern repeats on the shawl, 33 to go. I didn't get a lot done on it today because I can't do lace while I'm talking or being talked to. It just doesn't work. I did however get three points done on the crepe paper crown I'm making. Its turning out very well!

I'm almost done with the t-shirt order. Yay! I think I've pretty much finished everything on my list this weekend. Tomorrow is tax day. boo taxes!

I'm in love....

Can I just tell you how much I adore my local Borders? They rock major face! I was able to get the new Knit.1, Crochet Today, and yes even Interweave Knits all tonight. I love you Borders! You are good people! I haven't even looked through them yet. Reviews will follow.

Burrrr!

Why does it have to be so cold here? I'm not quite getting the weather. I'm not getting the Earthquakes either. I don't ever remember hearing of people feeling earthquakes in Oklahoma and now we're getting seven in a week. Weird... Apparently we get 30-100 or so earthquakes a year in OK, hmmm thats a fun statistic, yet very odd. Ok I'm done ranting.

Go see Ghost Rider. It is sooo good! I got to see the free screening tonight and I really enjoyed it. Some of the comic book movies are poorly made and have a bad plot, but this one was really good. Its just my opinion, but Marvel movies are way better than the DC movies that have come out even if they don't follow the comic books at all. My name is Dana and I am a geek. Nice to meet you. We'll talk next when Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix comes out. I'll be the one dressed up like Molly Weasley.

Fabric Valentines

This is one from the Craftyminx vault. I made these cards my freshman year of college. I made so many of them that I was sick of cutting hearts out of fabric, but it was worth it because everyone loved them. This is one of the originals, which I sent to my parents. The ones for my friends were smaller (index card sized). Six years ago and they are still holding strong. Woot!

To make these cards you will need...

Fabric scraps in shades of your Valentine choosing. This is great for stash busting!
Pre-folded cards or blank index cards (the perfect size for Valentines!)
Fusible Web
pencil
scissors (small and sharp work best)
iron
optional materials;
teflon pressing sheet
embossing materials: gun, ink, powders

Cut your fabric to a workable size then cut your fusible web to just a little smaller than your fabric. Then you will iron the web to the fabric, paper side up (follow the directions on the web that you use).

Make sure all the edges are down. Don't take the paper backing off!
Repeat this for each fabric that you have.

Next, draw hearts and letters on the paper of the fusible web. Make sure your letters are drawn backwards or will look right upside down.

Now cut out all of your hearts and letters and take the paper backing off.

Place your cut outs on to your paper cards in the layouts that you want them in. They will pretty much stay held in place until you iron them. Once you get your layout figured out, take it to the iron and iron down all of the cut outs. Make sure all of the edges are down. You can even add cutouts to the envelope. Just make sure there is no steam coming out of your iron!

Now you have a finished card that you can write a special note in or on the back of and share with a Valentine.


Or... You can jazz it up a bit.

To add embossed details, use an embossing pen to go around the hearts and add some gold embossing powder, write a message and use embossing powder, or stamp some more hearts and add clear powder. Heat it up using a heat gun (make sure you don't burn the paper or fabric!). Fin!
