Thrifted Thursday

This post could also be entitled - The vintage/handmade legacy of Jennie Stanfa.

My friend Levi and I spent some time together this weekend, which meant thrifting and estate sales. We happened across a lovely estate sale very close to my home and decided to pop in and see what they had. It wasn't a sale put on by a big auction house so everything was really cheap and it was my favorite kind of estate sale -- one with the family there. Don't think I'm weird by saying that, but I love hearing stories about the person whose house I'm rifling through. I love giving their beloved treasures a place in my home. What's really sad about this sale was that there wasn't very much stuff left at all by the time we got there (probably because everything was dirt cheap). Clothing was 50 cents each so we immediately fell upon the closets searching for vintage treasures and oh boy did we find them!

While we were checking out, one of the family members was reminiscing about the clothes. She told us if we found any handmade garments they were made by Jennie (she was a professional seamstress and designer) and there would probably be tags in some of them. Sure enough, we found some in our stash. I believe the three dresses on bottom were all the handmade ones we got in the bunch. Knowing who made them makes them very special. We assured her family that we are lovers of vintage and all the things we bought were going to very loving homes who would remember Jennie and her talents.

I also found some curtains that Jennie made from sheets! They are in my dining room right now and they are so beautiful I think I'll make some from other coordinating sheets from my stash to go on the other two windows in the room. Come to think of it, I might actually have these in my stash. hmmmm.

I think I spent $4 on everything I got there. It was one of the best estate sales I've ever been to. I'm just really sad that we didn't get there when it opened that day.

Thrifted Thursday

One of my goals this year was to start looking through clothing more as I thrift. I've been finding way too many awesome things, including some things I can actually wear. I usually look through the baby and kids clothes too since we have children in our life (and a new niece on the way!). I'm developing a new weakness for adorable vintage baby clothes. I still have a vintage mug and sheet addiction too. Our house is slowly being taken over by awesome vintage. I'm glad Sheldon loves me as much as he does or me and my vintage wares would be on the streets! :)

More mugs. I hoard these almost as much as sheets. ;) These vintage floral mugs from Japan always catch my eye. I'm determined to get a full set one day.

Valentine Decor

It all started with a thrifting spree where I found this picture...

...and then after a bunch of ravelry searching looking for heart granny squares. I found a couple that weren't squares that I still wanted to make. I had to have a place to hang these rouge hearts, so I decided to make a little Valentine's Day vignette.

There's one heart missing, which didn't get finished in time to use the sunlight to take this picture.  So pretend like there's another heart on the left. I'm already thinking about what to change/add for next year :)

I am a sap for cute looking lonely mugs... I have a huge collection of them which I will one day share. I'm thinking next year I'll have a collection a week to share all the awesome things I get thrifting haha.

On a side note. If you're ever near Irving, go to this thrift store! This Union Gospel Mission thrift store is HUGE! I got a lot of wonderful things from this place. I was really smitten with their furniture section though. They had 4 small organs and like 5 pianos for sale. I should have taken pictures of the cool stuff I left in the store.

So this may have been a much better "deal" if it were a real McCoy cookie jar. But I love the all yellow version of this one way better. I almost didn't get this because it was marked $8 and I didn't want to pay that much, but then I noticed it was half off. I didn't find anything else at this store so I was ok with $4.

Other thrifters, do you hide your excitement when you find something good and keep looking over you shoulder like someone will go in for the grab before you? I did that move with this one, slowly turning it over to look at the bottom to see if it had any markings. haha silly me.

Thrifted Thursday

My friend Levi and I had a thrifting extravaganza this past weekend. There were many fun things to share but I decided that this one needed to be first. I spotted it first and picked it up and commented on how awesome it was but it was quite huge for a stuffed doll and where would I put it? Levi bought it because he agreed on the awesomeness. We've agreed that I get it back if I have a child. Ok well I agreed, but I have a key to his house ;) Has anyone ever seen a handmade seal before? I've seen dogs and cats made out of this fabric tons of times, which is what I secretly hoped this one was when I saw it.

Thrifted Thursday

Roadtrip thrifting is one of my most favorite things. This coat was out of it's place with the dresses and I knew that I had to have it even though it didn't fit (usually the case when I'm thrifting). Thankfully my lovely model, Alicia was willing to give it a new home. The coat had no identifying marks except that it was made it Spain. It is a very lovely piece and I know Alicia will rock it.
